The Victor Harbor Golf Club was established in 1911 and is one of the most scenic golf clubs in South Australia.
This highly rated course on the Fleurieu Peninsula has panoramic coastal and hinterland views and is a haven for native birds and animals.
The tee shot on the first hole is one of the most exhilarating in golf. It has been included in the Australian Golf Digest Hall of Fame as one of “Australia’s Iconic Golf Holes”. It is a marvellous sight and one which has to be amongst the best anywhere – a breathtaking start to a quality golfing experience. The tee is adjacent to the clubhouse and takes full advantage of the magnificent views of Encounter Bay, including the sparkling blue waters of the Southern Ocean, the grandeur of Granite, Seal and Wright Islands and Rosetta Head (the Bluff).
Over the years the design of the course has changed and the changes which have turned Victor Harbor into a first class course began in the late 1970s. A small group of dedicated members and staff improved three greens a year to get the course to the standard required by members and visiting players. After the changes to the course it was listed by Australian Golf Digest in the Top 100 courses in Australia and the first hole has been voted the best country first hole in Australia.
Victor Harbor provides memorable moments from the time you step onto the elevated first tee yet it’s immense contribution to the world of golf is less known. Having moved to the area from Michigan USA in the 1960s, Richard “Dick” Ambrose and his wife Mary introduced a new format of play that would in time become known the world over. It was called “Shot Gun” when Dick and Mary were joined by then secretary-manager Geoff Bohnsack and his wife Joan, Dick and Patty Rymill, Stan and Rose Lucas, Bill and Yvonne Goode and Jack and Dorothy Vawser. The format proved so popular it was used for the club’s opening and closing days and the name of the competition was changes to Ambrose. The South Australian Ambrose Championships continues to be played annually at Victor Harbor Golf Course.
Victor Harbor is committed to promoting the game of golf as exercise for the mind and body and delivers excellent tuition and coaching from the club’s PGA professional Gavin Stratfold. Two programmes, targeting different age groups are delivered each year – Get into Golf and the Junior Development program My Golf.
The Victor Harbor Golf Club Bistro provides a relaxing environment in which to enjoy the spectacular views after an enjoyable round of golf. It is renowned for its world class food and the bar is also well stocked with wines from the nearby world famous wine regions. The Clubhouse is available for Conferences, Seminars and Functions.
