Scottie Scheffler has not had his A game so far this week at Pinehurst. Chalk it up to the new dad doldrums or the fact the Pinehurst setup has emphasized strokes gained putting, arguably the chink in Scheffler’s armor, but the World No. 1 has sputtered through the better part two rounds at the U.S. Open.
This was made abundantly clear when Scheffler arrived at the par-3 17th, his 8th hole of the day, on Friday. Sitting at two-over for the tournament, the reigning Masters champ proceed to pull one straight into the left greenside bunkers, miles short and left of his intended landing zone. While the ball was still mid-flight, broadcast microphones picked up Scheffler roasting himself for the poor shot … in the third person.

When you start talking to yourself in the third person, that’s when you know you’re really going through it. Just ask George Costanza. Scheffler wasn’t able to save par either, falling to three over for the tournament with his second bogey of the day.
Things got even worse for Scheffler with a double bogey at the par-5 5th, which dropped him to T92, 32 spots out of the top-60 cut line. We’ll see if Scheffler can fight back and make the weekend, but if not, it sounds like he’ll be his own toughest critic.
