Each year at the Players Championship, the Wednesday caddie competition, in which loopers attempt to hit 17 green for a closest-to-the-pin prize, provides internet gold. There are chunks, there are shanks, pull hooks and push fades. There’s also plenty of hijinks, like the time Geno Bonnalie, caddie for Joel Dahmen, ate the world’s hottest chip and barely lived to tell the tale.
Seamus Power’s caddie, Simon Keelan, didn’t quite die by tortilla chip, but he did pull off one of the more impossible, never-before-seen shots in the caddie challenge’s history. Keelan, who was in a practice round group with 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton, grabbed Hatton’s 8-iron and turned it upside down to hit it lefty. Not only did he make contact, he hit the damn island green. Check out the wild video, filmed by Lowry:
Sorry, Seamus, no splash here. Just an absolutely pure upside-down 8-iron. He even took a professional divot.
If you’re wondering how, on earth, Keelan pulled this off, it’s because the dude is a straight baller. Per the Irish Independent, Keelan was the former professional at Monkstown Golf Club in County Cork. He nows plays off a plus handicap at Douglas Golf Club, also in Cork. Last year, the plus-5.3 handicap won his club’s Captain Prize with a gross three-under 69 off the blue tees. So yeah, he’s pretty good. But still, this was a bananaland shot that deserves to go down in caddie challenge history.
