The winner of this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open will earn a cheque for $US1.476 million. Not bad. But also not as much as one gambler stands to win if a certain longshot hoists the trophy on Monday morning.
The Action Network’s Darren Rovell reported on Wednesday that a $US10,000 bet has been placed on a golfer in the field with 150-to-1 odds of winning. And after doing some quick maths, a.k.a. using the calculator on my phone, that potential payout is a whopping $US1.5 million. James Adducci, is that you?

Adducci, of course, is the man who famously won $US1.2 million by making a huge bet on Tiger Woods before the 2019 Masters. He also made an unsuccessful huge bet of $US45,000 on Phil Mickelson to win the 2020 US Open. We’re guessing it’s not him, but you never know.
Also, this time, the bet isn’t on a Tiger or a Phil. The mystery person has that much confidence in… Carlos Ortiz? Yep, Carlos Ortiz.
Look, Ortiz is no slouch. He won the 2020 Houston Open by holding off a pair of upcoming Masters champs, Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama. And the 30-year-old finished runner-up in his final event of 2021, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.
But he’s gone missed cut, T-70 in his first two starts of 2022. And betting 10 grand on someone ranked 69th in the world against a loaded field at TPC Scottsdale seems a bit silly. Although, Ortiz did finish T-4 there last year… Hmm… Have they teed off yet…?
