WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Although the JPX925 Hot Metal line was launched last spring, this follow-up is the forged model that utilises a zippy face material for plenty of distance in a forged iron while delivering the syrupy feel Mizuno is known for in its irons. Adding to the options is the availability of an all-black version for those who prefer their irons to look badass in the bag as well as during the swing.

1. A new design. Although the shape will be familiar to those who played the previous version, there are significant enhances and alterations. For starters, gone is the interior microslot employed in previous iterations. Instead, a new, two-piece, hollow-body design allows for a thin, forged 4120 Chromoly-steel face for added spring at impact in the 4 through 7-iron. In addition to the new construction, a revamped variable-face-thickness design in the 4 through 8-irons expands the sweet spot as well. The face is 1.5mm at its thinnest (low heel) and 2.1mm in the centre for plenty of rebound.
The construction also has less weight in the toe are to make it easier to square the face while a more balanced stability frame promotes draw bias. As for sound, a bar in back combines with a rigid topline to produce a syrupy feel.
2. Digging it out of the dirt. Turf interaction is a key element of any iron and Mizuno delivers the goods here by returning to an enduring sole design.
“For this iron we’re bringing back our “triple-cut” sole design from a decade ago,” said David Llewellyn, vice-president of research and development for Mizuno. “The sole features a beveled leading edge, high bounce and trailing edge grind to get the club through the ground faster, making it easier to enter and exit the turf.”

3. Black is beautiful. Mizuno has a long heritage of taking a proven product and tweaking it to appeal to a wider base of players. The release of the JPX925 Forged Black players-distance irons in a murdered-out, all-black configuration is yet another step on that path and is sure to appeal to the Mizuno aficionado seeking to add some additional cool factor to their bag.
Although the striking finish reduces glare and slims the look of the clubhead (although that was far from needed), it boasts all the tech of the chrome model. Adding to the all-black look is the use of True Temper’s Dynamic Gold Mid 115 Tour Issue Gunmetal shaft and Golf Pride MCC black/grey grip.
