It’s been nearly five years since Dustin Johnson hit what Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee described as the greatest shot in golf history. Remember when something like that caused golf’s most-heated debates? Ah, simpler times.
Anyway, Chamblee was referring to DJ’s tee shot on the 396-metre, par-4 12th hole at Kapalua’s Plantation course during the final round of the 2018 Sentry Tournament of Champions (you know, when the LIV star used to play on the PGA Tour) that finished an inch short of going in the cup. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we?

We’d forgive you if you didn’t remember that from Johnson’s eight-shot romp that day. Hey, Dustin himself might not even remember that one. But one golf fan, a man named Ryan Iverson, clearly remembered. Because when he actually aced the same hole recently for an albatross, he immediately taunted Johnson. And then he tweeted at the two-time Major champ:
Hey DJ @DJohnsonPGA and yeah you’re right yours on 12 was from like 75 yds farther but I dunked it! #FirstHoleInOne #KapaluaPlantation pic.twitter.com/dgXQPij7eH

“Dustin Johnson, you got just close enough, buddy, but not quite here!” LOL.
It was a bold move – especially considering Iverson pulled off the feat from much shorter tees and not under Sunday PGA Tour pressure – but we’ll allow it! To be able to reference that in the immediate aftermath of the athletic highlight of your life is impressive.
Good for him. By the way, Iverson has pinned that tweet, made a photo of the scorecard his Twitter profile pic, and even changed his Twitter bio to mention the hole-in-one. Again, we’ll allow it.
Considering there has been only one hole-in-one on a par 4 in PGA Tour history, that’s a big deal. We’re surprised he didn’t give Andrew Magee a shout-out on the spot as well. Anyway, congrats to Ryan – and hang in there, DJ.
