As far as midweek getaway options go, few locations trump Mudgee for convenience and variety.

An easy 50-minute flight with FlyPelican (or a three-and-a-half-hour drive) north-west of Sydney, the town that earned its reputation for delicious honey has further blossomed in multiple ways. An extensive wine industry boasting a host of climate and location-unique varieties couples with a burgeoning food landscape in an enticing gastronomical union. And Mudgee is far enough out of the ‘big smoke’ to feel like you’ve escaped without having to travel for days.

Add to this scene a sneaky-good golf course. Replete with a new clubhouse, the course at Mudgee Golf Club is country golf at its best. Although don’t expect to plunder a good score around the course straight away.

“All our greens are push-up greens. The old-style push-up greens have stood the test of time,” says Mudgee head professional Peter Mayson. “The golf course rates fairly low on its Slope rating, but anyone who comes here finds out it’s twice as hard a golf course as anyone’s used to because of the push-up greens and how quick they are. They’re as good as the greens on any Level 1 golf course in Sydney.

“It’s a very long, very strong golf course and we often find when people come to play it … it’s flat, they can get around, there’s not many hills – but the quality of the greens and the speeds they get up to separates the good and bad players.”
