Playing golf with the sitting president has to be one of the coolest experiences there is. That is, until s–t hits the fan, as NHL legend Jeremy Roenick came to find out back in August of 2020.

Roenick, a recent inductee to the Hockey Hall of Fame, was our guest on this week’s The Loop podcast, and he told a wild story about a wild round with Trump. He was sitting president at the time, and in the midst of another campaign.
“First of all, security is everywhere,” Roenick said. “I mean, we had to have 35 golf carts following us, literally 35 agents following us in security and media and all that stuff.”
Roenick told us when they got to the 12th hole, the car that’s referred to as “The Beast” rolled up and those inside of it notified the group that they had to remove President Trump from the property due to an “air breach.”
“Everybody’s looking up in the air, and we’re like, we picked the wrong day to play golf with the President of the United States,” Roenick said.
Turns out, it was a tiny Cessna airplane that was immediately flanked by two F-16s that began shooting flares at it to get it out of the area. Threat averted, golf round back on.
“Donald is getting ready to tee it up [afterward] and he’s swinging his club and then he stops, and he turns to us and he goes ‘gentlemen, now that’s power,” said Roenick.
Of course, the situation was quite a shock to the system for Roenick, a scratch golfer who says he struggled to get the ball airborne after this all went down. We would, too.
