In a major coup for Australian golf, 2022 Open champion and captain of LIV Golf’s Ripper GC, Cameron Smith, will headline the 2024 NSW Open Golf Championship from November 14-17.
Smith, not yet announced as a starter in this year’s Australian Open to be staged two weeks later (November 28-December 1), will bring his international profile to the $800,000 tournament to be held at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on the Murray River.
The 31-year-old, a three-time winner on the lucrative LIV Golf League, said he was a excited to swap the Saudi cash for some country hospitality.
“I love supporting Australian golf, and when the opportunity arises, I want to be there,” Smith said in a statement today.
“The NSW Open is growing into a major event, and I’m excited to be part of this year’s tournament.”
The bombshell Smith announcement is expected to draw massive fan interest at this year’s tournament, which is still riding a wave of excitement after a record boost in prizemoney.
“It’s fantastic it is being played in a regional area and I can’t wait to see how many fans are at Murray Downs,” Smith said.
Added Graeme Phillipson, chief operating officer at Golf NSW: “Cam’s involvement is a huge boost for the NSW Open.
“His presence will undoubtedly elevate the level of competition and create an incredible atmosphere for all attendees.”

The NSW Open Golf Championship has a rich history dating back to 1931 and is one of Australia’s premier golf events. Past champions include Greg Norman (four times), Peter Thomson, Ian Baker-Finch, Jack Newton and Kel Nagle, whose name adorns the championship trophy.
