Repeat after us: “It’s just a Wednesday pro-am. It’s just a Wednesday pro-am. It’s just a Wednesday pro-am.”
Still, if you’re a Tiger Woods fan, it’s hard not to be excited when hearing encouraging reports from the Bahamas.
Woods’ latest comeback doesn’t officially begin until Thursday’s opening round at the Hero World Golf Challenge, but he put on a show on the front nine of Wednesday’s pro-am with two eagles. That’s right, two EAGLES.
Woods’ eagles came on the course’s two par 5s on the front nine, No.3 and No.9. On the ninth, Woods hit a 6-iron (downwind) from about 210 yards to set up a 10-footer, which he brushed in with his Scotty Cameron putter.
It’s not like Woods is setting a course, record, however. He actually recorded zero birdies on the front side and shot an unofficial 33 (3-under). Still, not bad for someone who is playing his first scrutinised round of golf in 15 months.
According to ESPN’s Bob Harig, Woods’ best shot of the day was a 3-iron into the wind on the 210-yard, par-3 eighth hole. Woods’ caddie Joe LaCava said the shot was “as good as he can hit a golf ball. It was that solid.”
Here are some other (mostly glowing) reviews from those on the grounds at Albany Golf Club:
Again, it’s just a Wednesday pro-am. But still. . .
UPDATE: Woods had a much less eventful back nine with eight pars and a bogey in windy conditions. Unofficially, he shot a two under 70. Woods has a noon tee time with Patrick Reed for Thursday’s opening round.
