For the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1926, the Genesis Invitational will not be played in the Los Angeles area. Mind you, the reason is understandable: the ongoing wildfire disaster in L.A. County caused event officials to move the PGA Tour signature for this year down the road to San Diego and the South Course at Torrey Pines, which recently held the Farmers Insurance Open.

Meanwhile, last week’s news that Tiger Woods would make his 2025 PGA Tour debut at the event was dampened on Monday when the 15-time major champion announced he had withdrawn as he continued to grief over the death of his mother, Kultida. In his statement, he said that he did intend to be at the tournament in his capacity as host.

Despite these setbacks, the storied PGA Tour event moves on with plenty to look forward to. With a 72-player field, the signature event will have a prize money payout of $20 million. And the top seven players off the World Ranking—Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Nick Taylor, Ludvig Åberg and Wyndham Clark—will all be there, as will more high-profile players such as Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler. WM Phoenix Open winner Thomas Detry will attempt to keep the good times going as well after four straight birdies to close out his dominant TPC Scottsdale performance.

Despite being behind six shots to start Sunday last year at Riviera, Hideki Matsuyama charged to victory with a nine-under 62 in the final round to claim his ninth win on the PGA Tour. The Japanese star has had two victories since then with last August’s FedEx St. Jude Championship and The Sentry last month.

This week’s winner will receive a $4 million first-place prize money payout from the $20 million purse and 700 FedEx Cup points.

Torrey Pines sits on one of the prettiest golf course sites in America, atop coastal bluffs north of San Diego with eye-dazzling views of the Pacific. Rees Jones’ remodeling of the South Course in the early 2000s not only made the course competitive for the 2008 U.S. Open (won by Tiger Woods in a playoff over Rocco Mediate), it also brought several coastal canyons into play for everyday play, especially on the par-3 third and par-4 14th. An annual PGA Tour stop, Torrey Pines received another boost by Jones prior to hosting its second U.S. Open in 2021, this one won by Jon Rahm. View Course Leaderboard
