Open Championship 2024: Tyrrell Hatton hit such a bad tee shot that he made himself carry his own bag

If you see a tour pro carrying his own bag, something went horribly wrong. It’s already been a troublesome day for loopers, with Ted Scott spotted on the ground after an illness, so the first thought might be that someone else is sick. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about that when it comes to Tyrrell Hatton and caddie Hugo Dobson. Nope! Hatton just hit a shot so abysmal that he thought it should be him carrying his own bag. “Pretty great Tyrrell Hatton update just now from @Kstupples,” Shane Bacon tweeted. “Hatton was carrying his bags down the 12th hole and told her that he hit his tee shot so bad he told his caddie he didn’t deserve to have someone carry his bag for him. Only Tyrrell!” That’s a first as far as we can remember. Pros have to carry their own bags every so often, but rarely does a PGA Tour and LIV Golf winner tell their caddie to take a load off because a tee shot was too embarrassing. That was so bad that I deserve some punishment is a hell of a move during the Open.
The botched shot was part of a three-hole run of bogey, double-bogey and bogey for Hatton that dropped him four strokes down the leaderboard. That won’t be a stretch to remember for the LIV golfer, who has dropped 25 places since the start of Friday’s play. He parred the 14th, so that’s something… Maybe? Routine fury leading to entertaining antics is a tradition at this point for Hatton in majors. The man is never chill on the course, and we (and his caddie, at least this time) are nothing but thankful.
