It wasn’t the way Team Australia had planned to open their ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf title defence but there is still plenty of golf to be played.
Struggling with the wind and finding momentum a challenge, Adam Scott and Marc Leishman combined to shoot 2-over 74.
“Obviously it’s a little disappointing. It was tough conditions and definitely not what we wanted for the first round,” said Leishman.
With Scott further explaining, “I think it was just the wind. I mean, it’s very tough to gauge exactly what’s going on out there when it’s blustery.
“We had no momentum today but in these conditions, it’s about as hard as it gets playing foursomes in blustery conditions around a tricky course.”
However the Australian’s are only five shots off the lead and looking on the bright side with the four ball format to be played in the second round.
“It’s not bad, though. You only feel bad because you’re 2-over. I mean, if you’re four back after the first round of any other event, you don’t care at all,” added Scott.
“There are 54 holes left. We’ve still got our health, we’re both healthy. It seems very somber here. It’s not that bad,” joked Leishman.
“Bodies are feeling good and let’s go out tomorrow and have a good one, eh, Scotty?”
Team Australia will play alongside Team Canada represented by David Hearn and Adam Hadwin teeing off at 9.10am at Kingston Heath Golf Club.
