Thanks to that two-shot cushion and an opening 65, Scottie Scheffler took a commanding seven-shot lead after Day 1 of the Tour Championship. Fifteen years ago, however, he was happy to just be playing with the big boys. Literally.
An unearthed local news video circulating on Golf Twitter this week shows the current World No. 1 as a 13-year-old competing in the 2009 Byron Nelson Junior Championship. But even cooler is the fact that the three golfers the WFAA segment chose to feature are Scheffler, an even younger Will Zalatoris, and an older Jordan Spieth, who ruled the roost back then when it came to the Texas junior golf scene.

Spieth, then a high school sophomore, shot a second-round 62 to win the event by 11 shots. But WFAA reporter George Riba also chatted with Scheffler and Zalatoris, who were going to be making their U.S. Junior Amateur debuts soon after. Now that’s a man with some great NEWS SENSE as they say in the journalism business. Have a look for yourself at this fun walk down memory lane:

Some noticeable highlights from the 99-second clip are Spieth hitting a wild drive, Scheffler not doing his patented back-foot slide in the downswing, and Zalatoris, well . . .
