On a day when the American team promoted an awkward clip of Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau kinda/maybe making up on the practice range at the Ryder Cup, Team Europe continued its domination in the team chemistry area of this biennial event. Most notably with a video that starts with several Europeans making fun of their biggest star.
Rory McIlroy has been open about why he hasn’t worn hats at team competitions and why he didn’t have one at the Tokyo Olympics. That didn’t shield him from some friendly ribbing from teammates this week.
“My head is so small that I have to get Nike to make me custom hats,” McIlroy first told PGATour.com. “So whenever I’m in a team event and the hats aren’t custom, they’re all too big.”
But he created a different type of HEADline shortly after by revealing some big news about that small head.
“I usually wear a hat when I’m at home playing. I just don’t want to look stupid with a hat that’s too big on me going to these team events. Ryder Cup Europe have assured me that the hats this year will be a good fit, so I’ll hopefully have a hat on my head for Whistling Straits.”
So RIP Hatless Rory. You might want to factor that in if you’re making any bets this week. Just saying.
Anyway, back to the point of this post. Watch during Europe’s team photo shoot as Lee Westwood, Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick make fun of Rory’s tiny hat for his tiny head:
Westwood is one thing. He’s a big dude. But if little Matty Fitz thinks your hat is small, then it’s really, really small.
Poor Rory, but you just can’t beat that kind of team bonding. Europe is already at least 1 up before Friday’s opening tee shots.
