This afternoon (Australian time), Shane Lowry will usher the golf world into a bold new future when he hits the first shot in TGL history. It hasn’t exactly been a smooth ride to this point – in late 2023, a dome collapse and the exodus of superstar Jon Rahm threatened to derail the tech-golf league before it even began – but when Lowry’s club meets ball a little after 1pm today, all that will become ancient history.
Clearly, there’s a lot riding on the Irishman’s opening shot, both real and imagined, and apparently the 2019 Open champion is feeling the pressure. Yesterday, he took to Twitter to share the thought that’s been keeping him up at night and let’s just say it’s very relatable.
If hitting the first ever shot in @TGL history tomorrow night wasn’t nerve-racking enough, imagine if I miss the 60ft screen 🙈😂 pic.twitter.com/WDw26k8Q5B

Be honest. We were all thinking it. Despite TGL having the biggest golf simulator screen on the planet, measuring 20 metres tall by 16 metres wide, Lowry wouldn’t be One Of Us™ if somewhere, deep down, he wasn’t worried about duck-hooking one straight into the seats. That won’t happen, of course, but technically it could, and the possibility is enough to give any self-respecting golfer the palm sweats.
If you’d like to see Lowry conquer his fears (or perhaps be conquered by them), tune in to Fox Sports or Kayo at 1pm AEDT when the Bay Golf Club takes on New York Golf Club in the inaugural match of TGL.
