One of the greatest things about the original “Happy Gilmore” is not Happy, Shooter, Veronica or Chubbs, it’s the rogue’s gallery of unforgettable B characters. There’s Mr Larson, Gary Potter, Donald the Heckler and, of course, Bob Barker, but no one did more with less screen time than Ben Stiller in the role of Hal L, the sadistic nursing-home orderly best known for lines like, “You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up,” and, “Now your back’s gonna hurt, because you just pulled landscaping duty.”

So far, we’ve heard confirmation that Julie Bowen will return as Virginia, Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Adam Sandler as Happy himself. We’ve also learned that various golfers and celebrities, from John Daly to Eminem, will make cameos. But what about Hal? Well, rest easy, folks. Your favourite psychotic male nurse was spotted on the set of “Happy Gilmore 2” last weekend, and he looks ready to kick ass and take names once more.

What role Stiller plays in the new film remains to be seen, but we can’t wait to find out. Long-awaited movie sequels have a mixed track record – for every “Terminator 2” there’s a “Zoolander 2” (sorry, Ben) – but “Happy Gilmore 2” continues to hit greens in regulation. If the writing is sharp and it can avoid becoming a grab-bag of cameos and references, we could have another classic on our hands come 2025.
