Scottie Scheffler will miss this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, a PGA Tour signature event and the final tune-up before the PGA Championship.
Scheffler, 27, is the lone player eligible for the limited-field event at Quail Hollow that is skipping the proceedings. The world No.1 has won four of his past five starts, including capturing his second Masters title and becoming the first player to successfully defend the Players Championship. He last played at the RBC Heritage, which he also won.
However, he and his wife Meredith are awaiting the birth of their first child. After his victory at the Masters, Scheffler nodded at the life changes ahead.
“I will go home, soak in this victory tonight,” Scheffler said at Augusta. “I will definitely enjoy the birth of my first child. But with that being said, I still love competing. My priorities will change here very soon. My son or daughter will now be the main priority, along with my wife, so golf will now be probably fourth in line.
“But I still love competing. I don’t plan on taking my eye off the ball anytime soon, that’s for sure.”
Scheffler’s dominant run has made him the favourite for the Wanamaker Trophy, and betting agencies have listed the Texan at 40-1 odds to become the first player to accomplish the Grand Slam in a single season. Scheffler finished in a tie for second at last year’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill.
The 2024 PGA Championship begins on May 16 at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. Brooks Koepka is the defending champion.
