Adam Hadwin and Xander Schauffele led the Callaway ambassadors around the world of golf, with both sharing fourth place at the elite Genesis Invitational at Los Angeles’ famed Riviera Country Club.
In its fifth year as an invitational, and for the first time a $US20 million Signature event on the PGA Tour, the 70-player Genesis Invitational had major championship quality.
San Diego native Schauffele played his way into the final group on Sunday and by the end of the day had a short birdie putt on No.18 to join a share of second place. Schauffele missed the six-footer, and with a round of 70 (one under) he finished tied fourth at 13 under, four shots off the winner. Schauffele’s missed putt was expensive, costing him more than $US600,000 to drop from a tie for second to fourth.
Tied with Schauffele at 13 under was Callaway ambassador Hadwin. The Canadian had rocketed into contention earlier on the final day and finished at 13 under par (271) courtesy of a six-under 65. The fourth place finish was Hadwin’s second top 10 on the PGA Tour in 2024, following a T6 at the American Express in nearby Palm Springs, California last month.
Hadwin had a blistering front nine at Riviera highlighted by five birdies to make the turn in 30 (five under), before adding another birdie at the par-5 11th. Hadwin stumbled with a bogey at the 13th before grabbing that shot back with a birdie at the par-5 17th.
“Anytime you shoot 10 under on the weekend at Riviera, you’re doing something right,” Hadwin said. “I felt I did a really good job these last two days of committing to a shot. I think there was a lot of indecision the first couple days led to some poor swings. The wind is tricky here, sometimes you don’t feel it, but it really plays heavy.”
Hadwin said as a Canadian, he already had one eye on the Presidents Cup International team, hoping for a third appearance when the biennial teams event heads to Royal Montreal GC in late September.
“I think so; we’re all extremely motivated to be there,” he said. “I think you look at the Olympics before that as well, I think we all want to be there. As much as we want to see each other do well, I think we all want to beat each other as well. There’s a little bit inside we all want to be the top Canadian, we all want to be the top dog.”
