Jason Day has signed off on a triumphant PGA Tour season despite a disappointing result at the Tour Championship finale in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Australian former world No.1 fell further down the leaderboard at East Lake Golf Club after a three-over 73 on Sunday dropped him to three over par (283).
Despite the disappointing result at East Lake, 2022/23 has been a remarkable season for the Queenslander in which he dug himself out of a slump that saw plummet to No.175 on the world rankings less than a year ago.
Day returned to the winner’s circle for the first time in five years with a PGA Tour victory, the 13of his career, at the Byron Nelson event earlier this year. It was among eight top-10 results Day posted this year, including a career-best tie for second at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. He is now ranked world No.23.
“There are a lot of positives moving forward,” Day said. “For some reason, I can’t help but be a little disappointed with some of the stuff this year because there has been a lot of good play mixed in with a lot of poor play (six missed cuts). It’s been good, but inconsistent. It’d be nice to keep the good play up next season and tighten up the poor results. But overall I feel I am close to having a multiple win season instead of winning once and then not really having a chance after that.”
After the Tour Championship, Day’s wife, Ellie, is due to give birth to the couple’s fifth child on September 3. “I’m pretty excited for our family to grow,” Day said.
Day said he wouldn’t play many tournaments in the PGA Tour’s Fall (autumn) portion of the season between September and November to be with his family.
